Lorraine Simiana — Artist Statement
Lorraine Simiana is a Sydney-based contemporary painter whose work explores psychological containment, silence, and the experience of the female body under systems of power and constraint.
Working primarily in oil on canvas and Belgian linen, her practice is rooted in observation, instinct, and lived experience. Figures appear suspended within net-like structures, held in states of tension that speak to both physical and emotional entrapment, conditions that are often invisible, yet deeply felt. A restrained visual language, marked by stillness, repetition, and controlled composition, gives presence to what is frequently left unspoken.
Her current body of work, Unseen / Unheard — The Weight of Silence, continues this investigation through restrained figuration and considered spatial environments. Recent developments in the work have introduced layering, translucency, and suspended elements that begin to move beyond the picture plane, suggesting environments of containment rather than isolated figures, and pointing toward a more immersive and spatial practice.
Simiana does not work toward predetermined outcomes. Her practice evolves organically, guided by the internal logic of the work itself and a commitment to following where each series leads. It is a process of discovery rather than declaration, one that resists resolution in favour of sustained inquiry.
She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Art School, Darlinghurst, and has exhibited widely across Sydney. She has held artist residencies at Blacktown Arts Centre and presented a solo exhibition, Unseen/Unheard: Giving Voice to Silence, at See Street Gallery in 2025.
